Plymouth, Maine
Plymouth, Maine, was incorporated on February 21, 1826, shortly after Maine became its own state separate from Massachusetts. Early settlement in the area began in the early 1800s when heavily forested land with abundant timber and water power attracted lumbermen from neighboring regions. Settlers such as Joseph and Amos Chandler, Simeon and Edmund Hartford, William and Ichabod Allen, Daniel Holbrook, and others established homesteads near streams and forest clearings, laying the foundations for what would become the town of Plymouth. The name itself was taken from Plymouth, Massachusetts, reflecting the common practice of early New England settlers naming new communities after places they had left behind. By the time the town was incorporated, the population numbered around 503 residents, and it included land taken from neighboring communities to create a distinct civic identity.
During the 19th century, Plymouth’s economy was shaped by its natural resources. Forests provided lumber for mills and trade, and waterways such as Martin Stream and the ponds in the area offered power for early manufacturing. Industries in the town produced cloth, lumber, furniture, carriages, leather goods, and more, reflecting a diverse local economy rooted in resource extraction and craftsmanship. As transportation improved and nearby cities like Bangor grew, Plymouth maintained its rural character even as the world around it changed.
Throughout the 20th century and into the present, Plymouth retained its small-town atmosphere while modernizing gradually. Census figures show a population that has fluctuated modestly over time, with about 1,325 residents recorded in 2020, living across more than 31 square miles of land and water. Outdoor life has long been part of the community’s identity, from fishing and boating on local ponds to enjoying the wooded landscapes typical of central Maine. While much of its early industrial base diminished with changing economic patterns, Plymouth’s history as a timber and settlement community remains a defining part of its heritage, reflected in the town’s landscapes, place names, and longstanding traditions.
