Location

Elmira is a college town located in Chemung County It is situated in the southern tier region of the state, near the Pennsylvania border. Elmira has a population of approximately 28,000 people.

Historically, Elmira was known for its role in the abolitionist movement and as the site of a Civil War prison camp. During the Civil War, the Elmira Prison Camp held Confederate soldiers, and approximately 3,000 prisoners died there. Today, the site is marked by a cemetery and a memorial.

Elmira is also famous for being the birthplace of Mark Twain, the renowned American writer. He lived in Elmira for several years and wrote some of his most famous works, including “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” and “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” while staying there. The Mark Twain Study, a small octagonal building where Twain did much of his writing, is preserved on the Elmira College campus and is open to the public.
