Location

This affordable Pennsylvania home for sale is in Windber, a borough located in Somerset County. It is situated in the Allegheny Mountains and is part of the Johnstown Metropolitan Statistical Area. Windber has a population of around 3,900 residents.

Historically, Windber was a coal mining town that developed in the late 19th century. It was founded by coal baron Charles Schwab in 1897 as a company town for the Berwind-White Coal Mining Company. The town was named after a combination of “Wind” from the nearby Windber Mountain and “Ber” from Berwind, the last name of the coal company’s founder.

Windber prospered during the early 20th century as coal mining operations expanded, and it became a center of coal production and processing. However, with the decline of the coal industry, the town faced economic challenges and a decrease in population in subsequent decades.

Today, Windber retains some of its historical charm and has a strong sense of community. It offers amenities such as local shops, restaurants, and parks. The town is known for its annual Miner’s Memorial Day celebration, which honors the area’s coal mining heritage.
