Williamstown, Vermont

Williamstown is a town located in the northwestern portion of Orange County, Vermont. Covering approximately 40.3 square miles, the town is characterized by its quiet New England beauty, featuring sugar maple trees, stonewalls, and patchwork fields. The local geography includes the Stevens Branch of the Winooski River and the scenic Williamstown Gulf, a natural area that once drew travelers to its medicinal springs and now serves as a peaceful habitat for native flora and fauna. Additionally, the town is home to the 905-acre Ainsworth State Park, which offers opportunities for camping, hiking, and hunting.

Historically, Williamstown was chartered on August 9, 1781, by the Republic of Vermont and was named after Williamstown, Massachusetts. The first settlements were established in 1784 on West Hill. Early notable residents include Elijah Paine, who served as the town’s first moderator and later became a Vermont Supreme Court Justice and a United States Senator. Another prominent figure born in Williamstown is Thomas Davenport, a blacksmith who invented and patented the world’s first electric motor in 1837.

As of the 2020 census, Williamstown had a population of 3,515, making it the second-largest municipality in Orange County. The central village area, recognized as a census-designated place, is home to about 1,264 of those residents. The community preserves its heritage through the Williamstown Historical Society, located on Main Street, which maintains artifacts and records of the town’s rich past.
