Edgefield, South Carolina
Edgefield is the county seat of Edgefield County in western South Carolina. It sits in the Piedmont region, about 25 miles north of Augusta, Georgia. The town was established in 1785 and became the county seat soon after.
Edgefield is known historically for producing an unusually large number of major political figures in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It produced ten South Carolina governors and several U.S. senators. One of the most famous was Strom Thurmond, who served as a U.S. senator for nearly 50 years and ran for president in 1948 on a segregationist platform.
Before the Civil War, the area was dominated by plantation agriculture. After the war, it became nationally known for political violence during Reconstruction; the term “Edgefield tradition” is often used by historians to describe its reputation for aggressive, sometimes violent politics in that era.
The town has a courthouse square dating back to the 1800s. The current county courthouse was completed in 1839 and is one of the oldest courthouses still in use in South Carolina. Many buildings around the square date from the 19th century.
Edgefield is also historically associated with Edgefield pottery, a type of stoneware made by enslaved African Americans in the 1800s. Some of the most famous pieces were created by an enslaved potter named Dave, who signed his work and wrote poetry on it, which was extremely rare at the time.
The surrounding area is heavily agricultural, especially known for peaches. Edgefield County is part of the region sometimes called the “Peach Belt” of South Carolina.
There is no interstate highway running through Edgefield. Access is mainly by state highways, which contributes to its isolation and slow growth. Most large retail, medical services, and entertainment require travel to nearby cities like Aiken or Augusta.
